From Awkward Falls to Priceless Memories: Learning to Ski at 38
Two years ago, at 38, I decided to try skiing for the first time.
I vividly remember that January day, standing nervously on a beginner slope in Macugnaga at the foot of Monte Rosa.
Growing up by the sea, mountains had never interested me.
My childhood memories were filled with sandy beaches, salty air, warm sunshine, no snow, cold air, and slopes.
But on this particular day, watching my five-year-old daughter Mia effortlessly go down the slope changed something in me.
There was an hour left in her ski lesson, and seeing her courage inspired me. Without overthinking it, I decided, "Why not try?"
Truthfully, I felt completely silly at first.
Imagine a grown adult barely standing upright while little children, less than half my size, pass him like thunders.

It was humbling, embarrassing even.
But despite the awkwardness, I felt strangely excited by the new challenge.
That day, standing clumsily on those skis, I quietly made myself a promise: someday, I'd confidently ski with my daughters, Mia & Greta.
My goal wasn't about mastering technique or being fast.
I simply wanted to share the experience and joy of skiing with my kids.
So, I practised every time I could.
Over the following months and into the next season, I went on the slopes whenever I could.
I started taking lessons, then with friends, and sometimes alone.
Gradually, an hour of practice became two, then three.
Soon, I took my first cable ride, tackled my first blue slope, and eventually conquered my first red slope.
Each small victory boosted my confidence and moved me closer to my goal.
Last winter, we took a week-long ski vacation in Pila.
Skiing every single day accelerated my progress tremendously.
Mia quickly became a capable skier, confidently handling slopes that once intimidated me.
Meanwhile, Greta, my younger daughter, initially resisted skiing.
On her first attempt, she lasted just 30 minutes before deciding it wasn't for her. However, she gave it another try this year and surprisingly started enjoying herself, overcoming her initial fear.
This steady progression brought us to today, March 7th - a day I'll never forget.
Finally, I reached the milestone I'd dreamed about two years earlier.
I skied side-by-side down the slopes with Mia and Greta.
Daddy & Mia - March 2025
The joy and laughter we shared as we carved our way through the fresh snow made every awkward fall, every uncomfortable moment of learning, entirely worth it.
Looking back, none of this would have happened without embracing the discomfort of trying something completely new.
Daddy & Greta - March 2025
At 38, skiing seemed ridiculous, but stepping into that awkward space ultimately gave me one of life's most rewarding experiences.
An incredible reminder for me personally that great things come from discomfort and awkwardness sometimes.
But the reward is well worth it.
Thanks for reading this far. I will see you all next week.
